Translation
The heart has let go of what it once loved and sought,
And no longer complains nor laments its losses.
It awakened after drunkenness, regained its pride after humiliation,
For a heart that yearns for greatness is ever-shifting.
How long must I cater to someone who desires my humiliation,
And exhaust myself seeking her favor, only for her to grow angry?
O 'Ubaylah, the days of beauty are few,
Your reign is brief, then it fades away.
So do not think I regret the distance between us,
Nor that my heart is tormented by the flames of passion.
I have said that I have moved on from love,
And someone like me does not lie when he speaks.
I have abandoned you, so go where you please,
And try others, for the wise one always experiments.
Indeed, he who lingers at the ruins of a home,
Weeping for its traces and mourning the past, is disgraced.
But triumphant is the one who in battle,
Roams freely, facing opponents as dust fills the air.
O my companion, may God bless you! Rise and sing to me,
From the cups of death, for I drink deeply from their blood.
Do not serve me the cup of wine, for it only
Misguides the brave one's mind and makes it stray.
